This is one of those toys that I had as a kid, and now as an adult, I wanted one again. I put it on my wish list, and received it, among other items. My husband, daughter, and parents really like being able to shop from my wish list.
This toy is for amusement only, it's not at all educational. You think or ask out loud a simple yes or not question while holding the ball with the 8 up. Then turn the ball over, and get one of a variety of replies, which might be hilarious when combined with the right question. It's a lot of fun at parties, especially if the participants are a bit tipsy. I think that this is a better toy for adults than for children.
This thing shouldn't be roughly treated...I know that the ones I had as a kid could and did break, if dropped. I received my new one a couple of days ago, and I haven't broken it yet. I can't say exactly how durable the new versions are.
I do have a complaint about it...the little message piece inside the ball doesn't always come up with one message side up, sometimes it will have an edge come up in the window, which is a bit frustrating.

I took it to work (seriously) and my office mates and I have had, well, a "ball" with this thing.
It has provided great amusement for all of us and we frequently consult it for such serious questions as "will so-and-so show up for the meeting?"
An amusing and novel throw-back to the days before computers and other electronic gadgets.

The new magic 8-ball has come a long way down from the original. The current version has a very dark window, so the 8-ball answers are barely legible. And the liquid inside appears to be more viscous, so the answers rise slowly, and 50% of the time, the answer polyhedron rests on an edge, so there is no answer at all.
Compared to a friend's older 8-ball (30 years old), which is very fast to respond, and easy to read, this new 8-ball is clearly a few steps in the wrong direction.

My husband needed this 8 bal for a prop in a business meeting speech. To put it simply, it doesn't work, when you turn it over, no little phrases pop up, you can see that they are in there, but they don't come all the way to the window.

I bought two of these Magic eight balls. One for me and a gift for someone. The package reach on time, but to my dismay and anger, the window where you are suppose to view the answer is clouded up you can't see anything, it's two that I bought and it's the same with the two. This was really really disappointing. Anyone out there, a warning. Do not buy this item.
