Everything I have from M&D is sub-par quality. Things break, paint chips really bad, and the stuff is not durable. Cheaply made in China. I always though it was a great brand, but now that I have a child and see it day in day out, I am disappointed. Plan Toys makes FAR better more durable stuff, and has far less safety issues with heavy metals than M&D.

I wish I had known how much fun my kids would have "cutting" food, I would have purchased more sets like this. They play with this toy several times a week, they love to put all the cut up fruit in a bowl and have fruit salad. I have not had problems with the velcro or fruit not lining up as others have posted. We love this set!

This is a great set! It's also a good way to show very young children how to make matches. I often sit with my daughter and have her match up the pieces of fruit. The colors are vibrant and is a very good learning tool for not only colors but identifying fruits.

My daughter who is little under 3 loves this toy. At first she was a little frustrated because the pieces moved around even when she was careful. Later she overcame that and was more delicate in placing the pieces. I think thats a good thing, because she's practicing to hold her hand steady and is increasing her patience. To make it slightly better for her, we take turns on placing the pieces and when its my turn, I readjust any pieces that moved during her turn. However I do see how this toy can get a little frustrating for younger kids.



Another variation we're trying is to not put the tiles on the board, but on the carpet instead while replicating the pattern. That way she develops a sense of spatial geometry.



All that is bonus though - the bottom line is she loves to play this.

My 3 year old got this for Christmas and loves it. When he gets it out he prides himself in arranging the boards/patterns around him so he can view his art. He was having trouble with puzzles, but since he started with this something clicked within him and he has begun to understand the concept of smaller pieces coming together to make a larger picture. He is proud of himself when he names the right shapes and colors and counts the right number of each.

I usually love Melissa & Doug toys, but this puzzle was a little disappointing. Although, I love the concept and the educational value of it, it can be pretty frustrating. The pieces do not stay in place. You put one piece in, and the rest of them slide out of place. This puzzle would, probably, be better if the pieces were magnetic. So unless you are planning on getting rid of the picture boards, like one of the reviews recommends, try looking for something better.

Bought these for my autistic nephew, who LOVES shapes. After watching the rest of the family (it was hit with everyone!) play with it, he finally figured out to match the shapes with the ones on the boards :) It was the perfect gift, turns out they were looking for one of these and just hadn't been able to find it in the stores. Amazon to the rescue!



The only downside is that the small pieces are loose, I was hoping maybe the boards would be a cover for the wooden box, but they are not. Guess you could put the pieces in a plastic baggie...otherwise they'll end up all over the place :P

I bought this because my 11 month old son had so much fun playing at a playdate with a Melissa & Doug toy that's no longer made apparently as I can't find it - a box with doors with these same variety of latches. It really engaged him for a long while. Unfortunately although this latches board is cute my son just isn't all that interested in it. He found it interesting for like 5 minutes. Disappointing. I guess it will be good for developing fine motor skills, at which he's already advanced, but I don't see this toy engaging him for long play periods. Just short stints here and there.

Pros:



Wooden - no worrying about cardboard boxes getting bent.



Graphics - great graphics on the front of the toy, but nothing on the back. I thought it would have been nice to put some information about the food on the back like on real food. Especially in a society where reading labels is a big part of knowing what you are eating.



Shape of the items - pretty good representation of the real items they represents. For example the spagetti is just like a pack of spagetti you would find in the grocery store.



Great value for play food that will last.

Nothing on the back of the items



Heavy wood could cause pain if dropped on a little foot.



Heavy paint smell out the package... Would be a little worried if my little one put it in her mouth, but she is 5 and I don't have to worry. I point this out if it is purchased for a younger child.

Always had good luck with Doug & Melissa products. This one was no exception, but I will point out that I was a little surprised and disappointed that the "boxed groceries" (cereal, sugar, crackers, etc.) were only labeled/printed on one side of the package with the back side being just solid-color paint. A big deal? Not at all, but then again these aren't exactly cheap-o toys either, so these are the kinds of details that get noticed.

I don't really know why my 2.5 son loves these horses but he does. He eats, sleeps and plays with them. They are all in excellent condition and we have NO problems with fur coming off. After about 8 months of play one of the heads broke off but it's to be expected with how much and hard he plays with them. Their is also so many in the box that he won't mind losing one.

~ Toooooo many little pieces! Candles, and wooden circle to stick on the cake. I put most of them away for now, maybe later it will be fun and not just messy.

This is a great toy. My daughter got it for her 2nd birthday, and enjoys playing with it...whenever she can get it away from her 6 year old sister! It it an item that can be enjoyed on many levels and by many ages. My one complaint is the storage box. I don't understand why there is not a lid! It makes it difficult to store and stack with other food. I know it's a small thing, but are'nt we all looking for items that make our life easier? A simple flat lid that fastens on this toy would keep everything in place without making it necessary to use a plastic bag or another box.

We purchased both this item as well as the other ballerina one; and we were very pleased with what we got! They are much cuter in person and come in a nice wooden box which is very nice ------ EXCEPT FOR ONE THING: It doesn't have a LID!!!!!!!! I find it unacceptable that a toy that consists basically of small parts, for kids, can come in a nice wooden FRAME, instead of a box. I was hoping that there would be at least a plastic lid of some sort, but not even that. Once you remove the plastic wrapping you end up with a wooden frame that serves no purpose.



However, the girls LOVED the toy itself. Too bad that by the end of the day, half the pieces were already lost.

My daughter (age 2) loves these dolls!! Great gift for any little girl. My only issue with the toy is that there is no top/lid for the box.
